The Leatherworks | Leeds
We are proud to showcase our recent transformation of Sugarwell/The Leatherworks, a student residential complex that blends heritage with modern living. This ambitious renovation project was shortlisted for the Student Accommodation Scheme Development Award 2024, recognising our commitment to innovative design and high-quality student living.
The redevelopment covered seven blocks, including two listed buildings. The project was completed in three phases, with Phase 1 alone delivering 200 bedrooms across three blocks. In total, we created 451 contemporary student bedrooms, all redesigned to include private ensuites—a significant upgrade to meet today’s student lifestyle expectations.
To maximize space efficiency, we installed modular ensuite pods, which were designed to be demountable to fit through existing doorways—ensuring seamless integration without compromising the building’s structure. Additionally, the accommodation now features 81 communal kitchens, fostering a sense of community among residents.
Beyond individual living spaces, we introduced a range of exceptional amenities to enhance student life. A large common room and cinema room provide inviting social spaces, while the central quad now hosts three bespoke cabins—a bakery and two social hubs, offering students vibrant places to gather, relax, and enjoy quality food.
This project exemplifies how thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship can revitalize listed buildings, delivering an outstanding student accommodation experience that meets both modern needs and heritage preservation standards.
